"Business Grammar Update" Workshop Offered by FGCU Florida Institute of Government

FORT MYERS, FL - Managers and employees from the public and nonprofit sectors are invited to attend a half-day course “Business Grammar Update” presented by the Florida Institute of Government at Florida Gulf Coast University as part of its Administrative Assistant Series from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 at the FGCU Broadcast Building Room 111.

The course will teach current guidelines for correct punctuation, capitalization, usage, format and spelling. Participants will learn how to avoid embarrassing mistakes and project a credible, professional image that will increase confidence.

Objectives:

     Update knowledge of what is considered correct usage of grammar

     Learn the underlying logic of punctuation and sentence structure

     Use your computer’s grammar checker to spot mistakes

     Differentiate between active and passive voice

     Construct clear, focused and complete sentences

     Identify the errors that computers often miss

     Project a polished, professional image

     Develop skills in applying these guidelines

Jim Jacoby is instructor for the program. He has more than 30 years experience in communications management for several Fortune 500 companies and has owned his own consulting business since 1977. Personally, he has taught more than 7,000 seminar participants and college students worldwide.

Jacoby’s expertise is business writing, including letters, memos, email, reports, job procedures, and grammar and punctuation.
Currently, he teaches seminars at FGCU and Edison Community College, plus in-house at numerous organizations in Florida, Minnesota and Oklahoma. The author of a textbook and many publications, Jacoby holds a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from Pennsylvania State University.

The central purpose of the Institute is to help promote superior performance in government and nonprofit organizations through quality training, consulting and technical assistance.
