Students Lead Debate on Proposed Trauma Center Tax
10/9/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - The public and media are invited to attend a student-led debate about the proposed half-cent sales tax increase to support the Lee Memorial Hospital Trauma Center from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 in Reed Hall Room 247 on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Twenty-three FGCU students in Interdisciplinary Health Services 3101, “Shaping Health Care for the 21st Century,” conducted local, state and national research on both sides of the issue for five weeks in preparation for the debate. The class is a required core course for all majors in the College of Health Professions.

“This class provides students with leadership experiences that will help them become leaders once they graduate,” professor Cecilia Rokusek said. “It is so important that as we educate our future health professionals that they have an understanding of community issues affecting health care and that they learn to become actively involved in these issues.”

Representatives from Lee Memorial Hospital are expected to attend. An open question period for audience members is scheduled after the debate.

For more information, contact Rokusek at (941) 590-7452.
