FGCU Board Opposes Amendment 11
10/10/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees today adopted a unanimous position of opposition to Amendment 11, the ballot initiative designed to create a new statewide governing board for the state universities in Florida.

“The Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees unanimously opposes Amendment 11 as one that is not in the best interests of Florida Gulf Coast University, Southwest Florida or the state of Florida,” said FGCU Board of Trustees Chair Scott Lutgert. “The added layer of higher education governance would create an unwieldy bureaucracy, and it would reverse the current education governance process in which local communities have a significant role in the responsibility and accountability of their universities. We also oppose an interruption in the current system of K-20 seamless education that would result from have a separate governing board focusing only on universities if Amendment 11 were adopted.”

Today’s action by the Florida Gulf Coast University Board of Trustees opposing Amendment 11 follows recent positions of opposition adopted by the Florida Board of Education; the State University Presidents Association; the Florida Community Colleges’ Council of Presidents, and The Alliance of Educational Leaders in Southwest Florida.
