Southwest Florida May Gain 90 new K-12 Teachers By August; Applications for Summer Immersion Program Due June 6
FORT MYERS, FL - Up to 90 new teachers will be able to immediately enter Southwest Florida’s K-12 classrooms this fall as a result of an intensive four-week preparation program beginning July 7 at Florida Gulf Coast University but the pre-application deadline for participants is just two weeks away on Friday, June 6.
FGCU’s Teacher Immersion Program Summer Academy aims to prepare qualified and quality K-12 teachers who will assume full-time classroom responsibilities in fall 2003 in counties in Southwest Florida. Candidates from all subject areas are encouraged to apply but preference will be given in the areas of middle and high school science and mathematics, and K-12 special education.
Participants will take three courses required for professional certification and earn nine graduate credit hours. Successful completers of the Summer Academy will be invited to participate in follow-up services and awarded a $1,000 scholarship for six graduate credit hours toward the completion of professional certification requirements.
By the end of the first year of teaching, participants will have completed all requirements for professional certification and will have had on-the-job mentoring by a university-paid mentor for one year.
Invitation to interview for entrance into the Summer Academy is by pre-application only. To qualify, candidates must complete a pre-application form and provide a copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
In addition, two letters of recommendation, a one-page statement regarding the applicant’s interest in teaching, and scores from Professional or Subject-Area exams, if applicable, is requested.
Students are responsible for tuition, fees and textbooks for nine graduate hours of coursework.
The program runs weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and concludes July 31. A mandatory orientation is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, June 25.
The FGCU Teacher Immersion Program Summer Academy is made possible by a Teach for Florida grant and is offered in partnership with Barry University, Edison College and area school districts.
