FGCU Invites Sports Fans, Media to State Powerlifting Championships This Weekend
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites sports fans and media representatives to the Florida State Powerlifting Championships, 9 a.m., Saturday and Sunday, March 19 and 20 in Alico Arena to witness more than 60 powerlifters from around Florida compete for state titles and qualification to collegiate nationals.
"I am excited about the quality of lifters that will be at this meet," FGCU coach Jim Dundon said. "This state championship is a national qualifier for Open, Collegiate and Masters lifters."
"Our youngest lifter is 10 years old and our oldest lifter is in his 60s. There will be some new state records set, plus the meet being held in Alico Arena will be a great venue. The event is $5 for spectators and we have plenty of door prizes and music going on also," Dundon said.
Proceeds from the event help FGCU powerlifters travel to the Collegiate Nationals next month in Baton Rouge. So far, four FGCU competitors have qualified for the national competition.
The Florida State Powerlifting Championships are hosted by the FGCU Weightlifting Club in cooperation with FGCU Campus Recreation, and sanctioned by U.S.A. Powerlifting.
The competition is open to all registered USAPL members residing in Florida. The event includes 21 Male and Female Weight Classes, and 11 Divisions including Open, three Teen levels, Junior, University Student, four Master levels and Police/Fire/Military.
First through Fifth Place will be awarded to finishers in each weight class and division. Overall Outstanding Lifter awards will be presented to the best male and female competitor. The top five teams will also receive Team awards.
