FGCU Hosts Public Seminar Tuesday to Discuss the Effect of Host Cell Functions on Retroviral DNA Integration
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Biotechnology Seminar Series invites members of the public, healthcare community and media to "Effect of Host Cell Functions on Retroviral DNA Integration" 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 4 in Whitaker Hall 268.
The free seminar features speaker Anna Marie Skalka, director of the Institute for Cancer Research and senior vice president of the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
Skalka studies the molecular aspects of retroviral replication and has made significant contributions to elucidating the mechanism of retroviral DNA integration, which allows the virus to establish a long-term infection in the host.
A better understanding of the molecular aspects of retroviral DNA integration provides the basis for the development of novel antiviral drugs to treat AIDS.
Skalka received an A.B. degree in biology from Adelphi University and a Ph.D. in microbiology/biochemistry from New York University. She holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Department of Microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
She has held positions at the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. prior to her appointment at the Fox Chase Cancer Center.
Skalka is currently on the editorial board of premier journals in her field including the Journal of Virology, Cancer Research, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
