FGCU Invites Public, Media to View "Women's Work" Art Exhibit
3/30/2006

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to view "Women's Work," by FGCU alumnus Jeffrey Scott Lewis at the Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center.

The exhibit displays a series of paintings that questions gender based assumptions as it reveals new ways of looking at fabric, color and texture. The formal elements of design are used to convey the narrative content in "Women's Work."

The artist is very much involved with the process of painting, weaving, and collage.

"Collage allows me to combine my extensive three-dimensional experiences with a strong sense of competition. It is the language I choose to use as I question whether a man can fulfill a woman's role in raising children and keeping a home," Lewis said.

Five years of experience as a widower with young children provided the artist with the inspiration for this new direction. "When I returned to college as a junior majoring in art at the age of 40, my goal was two-fold: first, was to complete my bachelor's degree and secondly, to make art. I completed the first goal nearly two years ago graduating magna cum laude from FGCU's art program." Lewis plans to pursue a master's degree in fine arts.

The exhibit will be on display through April 26. There is a concurrent showing of smaller works from the series at the Addison Gallery, Bonita Springs, FL.

Admission is free. The gallery is open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays excluding University holidays. Contact the Sugden Welcome Center at (239) 590-7890.

For more information, media representatives should contact gallery director, Scott Snyder, at (239) 590-7354 or ssnyder@fgcu.edu . Jeffrey Scott Lewis can be reached at (239) 826-5626.
