FGCU Opens 'The Bald Soprano' June 14
5/31/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University opens "The Bald Soprano," written by Eugene Ionesco and directed by Barry Cavin, 8 p.m., Thursday, June 14 in the Arts Complex Theater Lab. The show runs through June 17.

First produced in 1950, "The Bald Soprano" is the first play by famed absurdist playwright Eugene Ionesco. Stemming from his own attempts to learn English from a book, Ionesco reveals the many idioms expressed in modern society and the amusement that he drew from such expression in this uproarious play.

Director Barry Cavin describes the play as "a parody of our firm belief that words matter and stories can be told."

"Ionesco has created a set of thoroughly English characters who are about to plunge over the brink of meaning and take the audience with them," Cavin said. "You will laugh until you realize the frightening accuracy of Mr. Ionesco's vision."

The cast includes Garreth Boland, Jason Hoppe, Rachel Kazor, Tawnie McDowell, Katie Pankow and Sam Walsh.

General admission is $10 and student admission is free with ID. Admission for non FGCU students with student ID is $5, and FGCU faculty and staff with ID is $5. Seating is limited. FGCU recommends attendees purchase tickets in advance. Seating will not be permitted after the show begins.
