FGCU Welcomes Freshman, Transfer Students and
Families to New Student Convocation
FORT MYERS, FL - Freshman and transfer students new to Florida Gulf Coast University will get an official welcome during the FGCU New Student Convocation at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19 in Alico Arena. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Convocation is a ritual signaling the beginning of a student's college career. It is the first of many educational experiences allowing students to develop a connection to FGCU. Convocation is a celebratory event that acknowledges FGCU's heritage, welcomes new students and their families to the shared pursuit of academic excellence, and affirms FGCU's unique mission.
Special guest speaker Rachel Myers, reporter with the News-Press, will speak of her travels to Afghanistan in 2003 where she lived for four months as a journalist working for a women's start-up magazine. Drawing from her experiences while in Afghanistan, Myers discusses the value of taking calculated risks and encourages new students to venture out of their comfort zone in order to best achieve their goals both in and out of the classroom.
