Public Invited to Seventh Annual Adaptive Sports Expo Oct. 4-6
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites Southwest Florida to learn about recreational resources at the seventh annual Adaptive Sports Expo, which kicks off with a reception and featured entertainment by Light Motion Dance Company at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct.4 in the Student Union ballroom.
"The directive of Light Motion is to help disabled people discover the untapped, unexplored world of dance and artistic movement and to integrate the art of wheelchair dance with mainstream professional productions," said Charlene Curtis, a wheelchair dance performer in Light Motion.
Activities include a pool party from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 5 at the FGCU Aquatics Center, and Sports Expo and Vendor Fair on Saturday, Oct. 6. Registration for Sports Expo begins at 9:30 a.m., and Vendor Fair is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Alico Arena. Food and drink is available for purchase.
The Adaptive Sports Expo highlights some of the ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events.
Information on different types of local recreational resources and activities is available and participants have the option of actually taking part in activities, including water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, aquatics, adaptive golf, wheelchair basketball and tennis, accessible climbing wall and other recreational activities.
Attendees have the opportunity to meet with a variety of local service agencies, vendors and groups involved with recreational opportunities through an informational exposition, which takes place in conjunction with planned sports activities.
