FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's 'Fight Song' premiers at tonight's women's basketball home-opener against Florida State.
The Eagles' never-before-heard fight song will be unveiled by FGCU's new basketball pep band. The song was written by FGCU Bower School of Music Head of Instrumental Studies, Rod Chesnutt.
"This is a unique opportunity to give to the FGCU community and become a part of building traditions. George Krumenacker wrote some fine words that depict the character of FGCU. I wanted to create a rousing musical work that captured that character for fans to sing and rally around," Chesnutt said.
Fight songs are a popular way for fans to cheer their team. Hundreds of colleges have fight songs, some of which are almost a century old. In singing a fight song, fans feel part of a large, time-honored tradition.
The FGCU women's basketball team officially opens its 2007-08 campaign tonight when it entertains No. 19 Florida State. Tip-off in Alico Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
