FGCU Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund Grows
12/6/2007

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Physical Plant and the FGCU Foundation recently received a generous and significant gift from B & I Contractors Inc. in support of the Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund - a scholarship fund that will financially assist qualified students enrolled in environmental studies, civil engineering or environmental engineering annually, in perpetuity.

B & I Contractors has been serving the University by installing mechanical electrical, and plumbing in new and existing buildings on campus. Gary Griffin, president and Jason Grabowski, vice president of B & I Contractors presented a $5,000 check to the FGCU Foundation demonstrating its commitment to FGCU students and Physical Plant.

With B & I Contactor's gift The Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund is now in excess of $17,000. On Nov 2, The Physical Plant Endowed Scholarship Fund committee awarded freshman Keishla Negron-Acevedo (first student recipient) from Islamorada, Fla. with a scholarship.

While serving as an ambassador for the 2006 employee annual giving campaign, assistant director of Finance and Business Operations in Physical Plant Vikki McConnell realized that collective donations from the department could result in an endowment. Creation of the endowment scholarship fund allows employees in Physical Plant to support both students and its departmental mission.

"Students in our department are a constant reminder of why we are here and who we are here to serve," McConnell said.

McConnell, Troy Kelly, coordinator of Physical Plant and Jim Hehl, director of Physical Plant are grateful to B & I Contractors for their contribution toward FGCU students.

The Physical Plant department at FGCU provides campus operations and maintenance. The department is actively involved with students, employing over 60 students since 1997, including 25 work study and 12 international students.
