FGCU Bower School of Music Presents Live Jazz Performance April 13
4/8/2008

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music presents a jazz performance 3 p.m., Sunday, April 13 in the Student Union ballroom. FGCU assistant professor of Music Theory David Thurmaier performs on guitar with Missouri All-State Jazz Band performer Doug Russo on bass. The performance is free and open to the public.

"The audience will get the opportunity to hear jazz improvisation in a small, intimate setting, where two musicians must continually interact and play off of each other," said Thurmaier.

The program features a variety of jazz styles and compositions including the swing of "In a Mellow Tone" by Duke Ellington, and the jazz-rock fusion of John Scofield's "Green Tea." In addition, the duo performs two original compositions, one with a Latin feel by Thurmaier and the second in a blues, Bebop style by Russo.

Thurmaier specializes in the study of American music, temporality of music, and the pedagogy of music theory. He holds a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Indiana University. Primarily a music theorist, he has performed on guitar in many venues. He and Russo have worked as a jazz guitar/bass duo for three years.

Russo is a bassist in the St. Louis, Mo. area, having recently graduated from the University of Central Missouri with a degree in music technology. He was selected for the Missouri All-State Jazz Band, and has played in numerous jazz combos and ensembles. He currently performs with singer Tony Viviano.

For information, media representatives should contact Thurmaier at (239) 590-7627.
