FGCU Partners with St. Andrews Society of SW Florida, Inc. to Establish Scholarship for Opportunity to Study in Scotland
8/4/2008

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University recently partnered with the St. Andrews Society of SW Florida, Inc. in Naples to establish a scholarship for FGCU students to study in Scotland for a minimum of one semester during the fall, spring or summer in 2008-09 academic year.

Initial ideas for this scholarship were generated several years ago by a few members of the St. Andrews Society who wished to expose a young person to life in Scotland and to learn about its history and culture. This past year St. Andrews Society president Don McGee worked with FGCU International Services director Elaine Hozdik to develop the scholarship.

"Student interest in study abroad has increased nationally and we see this trend at FGCU as well," said Hozdik. "Study abroad complements and broadens the educational experience on our campus and provides students with a global perspective that is valuable to the student and to future employers. We are grateful to the St. Andrews Society for their partnership in providing this opportunity to our students who otherwise might not be able to pursue this educational goal. It will also help to promote knowledge and understanding of the rich Scottish heritage and history."

Deserving students will be selected by FGCU International Services. The criteria for eligibility of the scholarship include students in good academic standing with a grade point average of 2.8 minimum, and preferably residents of Collier County. In addition, students will be asked to write a personal essay as part of the application process, and top candidates may be interviewed by St. Andrews Society board members.

"This is an exciting opportunity for both FGCU students and St. Andrews Society," said McGee. "We hope to support at least one student up to $5,000 in this next year. FGCU International Services will be assisting students to select and apply for appropriate study programs in Scotland, and to apply for our scholarship."
