FGCU Bower School of Music Opens 2008-09 Concert Series Sept. 19
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Bower School of Music opens its 2008-09 concert series with an evening of Lieder performed by soprano Jeanie Darnell, accompanied on the piano by Andrew Hudson. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19 in the Student Union ballroom.
Darnell is head of Vocal Studies at FGCU Bower School of Music. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Colorado-Boulder in 2002, and has served as faculty for music programs in the U.S. and Europe. As a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Guild Auditions in 1998, she has been in demand as a recital and concert artist, and hailed by critics for her "wonderfully bell-like tones."
Hudson is an accomplished musician with degrees in piano performance from three universities, and performs around the world both as a solo pianist and as accompanist to some of the most famous classical singers of our time. He has also premiered many works by award-winning American composers.
Songs by Alban Berg, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss form the evening's program. All three composers lived during the turn of the 19th century into the 20th in pre-World War I in Vienna, which was then the center of the intellectual and artistic world. These composers, who were contemporaries and knew each other, set to music the poems of the great poets of their time, such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Hermann Hesse.
Bower School of Music concerts are free and open to the public. Seating is open but there is a reserved section for those who call ahead to reserve a place at (239) 590-7851.
