WHAT "Romantic Symbolism in the Early 19th Century German Song Literature," with guest lecturer Robert Bailey, one of the world's preeminent scholars on the music of Richard Wagner.

WHY The lecture illuminates the central characteristics of the early 19th century German Romantic movement in music, touching on subjects that include artist/heroes, hunting horns, folksongs, the visual arts, poetry and incorporation of all the subjects into German opera. Bailey is on the graduate faculty of The Julliard School and as the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor Emeritus of Music at New York University. Prior appointments include the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation visiting professor at Tulane University. He has held fellowships from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
