FGCU Art Gallery Opens "Romero Britto: A Select Retrospective" Exhibition, Jan. 15
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Art Gallery opens "Romero Britto: A Select Retrospective," an exhibition of works from Miami-based artist Romero Britto. The exhibition opens with a reception at 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15, in the Art Gallery located within FGCU's Arts Complex. Exhibition runs through Feb. 5.
Britto brings his whimsical works to FGCU in a retrospective-inspired exhibition. The works on display will bring the viewers back to some of Britto's earlier works on newsprint and cardboard, through preparatory sketches for completed works, and back to the present day works being collected by museums around the world and by collectors ranging from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, to singers Gloria Estefan and Elton John.
Britto's highly energetic and vibrant paintings, silkscreens and sculptures combine elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti paining. With satire and humor, he creates art that he sees as a vehicle for carrying messages of joy and the celebration of life. Alluding to influences of early and modern masters, Britto's pulsating colors, pop themes and commanding compositions have led him to become one of the premier contemporary artists of his generation.
