FGCU's Office of Continuing Education Presents Second Annual Au Pair Conference
7/21/2010

FORT MYERS, FL - The Office of Continuing Education at Florida Gulf Coast University will host its second annual "Cultural Immersion for Au Pairs" program on Thursday, July 29 to Sunday, Aug. 1.

The au pairs are international students from around the world who live with American families - providing childcare while learning about the United States and the American way of life. As part of their work visas, they must earn postsecondary education credits while in the U.S.

During the intensive weekend of study at FGCU, the au pairs will learn about traditional American values and beliefs, cultural adaptations, U.S. government and business through classroom instruction, discussions, projects and group work. They will also go on two educational trips to Babcock Ranch to see a working Florida ranch and wilderness area, and to ECHO Global Farm to see a demonstration farm working internationally with the poor to provide agricultural information and training.

The au pairs will be traveling from as far away as Georgia and South Carolina to attend the retreat and represent a variety of countries including South Africa, Serbia, Germany, Brazil, Thailand, and France.

Media representatives should contact John Guerra, FGCU interim executive director of Continuing Education and the Renaissance Academy at (239) 434-4838 or jguerra@fgcu.edu.
