Hockey Club Tops in Nation
FGCU's Division II hockey club claimed the national championship Tuesday with a 4-2 victory over Grand Valley State (Mich.) in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division-II title game.
The club, the top-ranked team in D-II's Southeast region, captured five wins in five days, defeating Michigan, Colorado State, Northeastern and Michigan State and the championship, held at Germain Arena.
Athough it's not an NCAA-sanctioned sport, the hockey association features close to 500 teams in five divisions. Some players move from club play to professional teams.
