FGCU receives national award from the Arbor Day Foundation
4/24/2012

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) is the recipient of a national award from the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its outstanding contribution to tree planting, conservation and stewardship.

FGCU is one of 16 individuals and organizations being recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation at the annual Arbor Day Awards. The ceremony will take place at Lied Lodge & Conference Center, located at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Neb., on Saturday, April 28.

FGCU will receive an Arbor Day Celebration Award in recognition of representing the spirit of the tree planter's holiday.

In 2009, the university kicked off a tradition of Arbor Day celebrations and tree planting projects that have involved students, faculty and community members. The high level of enthusiasm and engagement led the campus to apply for and be recognized as a Tree Campus USA. The 2012 Florida Arbor Day celebration resulted in 40 new trees planted to help shade the Library Lawn, making the area a campus destination. The Tree Campus USA committee consists of students, staff, faculty and community members.

"I'm delighted that FGCU is being honored by the Arbor Day Foundation for our work in conservation," said FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw. "This award is particularly important to me, however, because it recognizes the environmental commitment of our students."

Since 1972, the Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the inspiring and life-changing work of leading environmental stewards and tree planters through the annual Arbor Day Awards.

"It is gratifying to see students engaged in conservation and passionate about tree planting," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Florida Gulf Coast University sets an example for other colleges and universities by taking its Arbor Day celebration to an even higher level - and improving their campus in a meaningful way for students for years to come."
