Employee Grant-In-Aid (GIA) Program
Guidlines
2006-2007
Objective: In support of the University's professional development and diversity goals, the GIA provides paid educational leave to eligible employees pursuing programs of study toward their educational objectives.
Responsibilities of the University President (or designee): Charges a selection committee with the responsibility for recommending candidates for the GIA Program. In consultation with the University Equal Opportunity Programs (EOP) Director, the President (or designee) approves or disapproves the award recommendations submitted by the University’s selection committee.
The committee shall consist of at least nine members who are appointed by
the President. Representatives from the following employee classifications shall
be included: Faculty (3 members), A&P (3 members), USPS (3 members). Members
shall serve two-year staggered terms.
Responsibilities of the University Equal Opportunity Programs (EOP) Director: Responsible for implementation and coordination of the program in accordance with the guidelines. Ensures appropriate record keeping of all GIA documents including but not limited to, the application materials, selection committee deliberations, award notification letters, promissory notes, and replacement personnel memoranda. Ensures that employees are notified of their selection or non-selection for GIA awards in support of educational leave. Ascertains satisfactory academic progress and maintains an academic progress report on each recipient. Provides notification to appropriate University departments in situations where the recipient has not fulfilled all obligations of the program.
Responsibilities of the FGCU Selection Committee: To provide guidance for the administration of the GIA Program, reviews applications and recommends candidates for the GIA award to the President or the President’s designee.
Eligibility Guidelines: Employees are eligible to apply:
Grant-in-Aid Awards: A maximum of four awards will be provided for the 2006-2007 academic year: 2 to University Support Personnel Services (USPS) employees and 2 to Faculty or Administrative and Professional (A&P) employees. Each USPS, Faculty or A&P recipient will receive a $700 stipend. Recipients assume a service/repayment obligation as a condition of accepting the award. This obligation must be fulfilled prior to receiving a second award.
Paid Educational Leave and Stipends: $2,800 is allocated to provide a stipend to USPS, Faculty, or A&P employees who are selected.
Departmental Replacement Funding: The maximum replacement funding to be appropriated to a recipient’s department for each full-time award is $5,000 for the Faculty or A&P award and $3,000 for the USPS award.
Salaries and benefits of all employees selected for the educational leave program are to be continued in full and no work obligations are to be required for full-time leave granted. Employees granted half-time educational leave have a required half-time work obligation. Under Rule 6C-5.920(6), F.A.C., employees continue to accrue annual and sick leave.
Contingent upon funding, a total of four grants will be awarded annually. The recipients may choose to use the grant to attend classes as a full-time student in one semester or as a part-time student in two semesters. These grants will be allocated between the following employee groups: a) Faculty/A&P, and b) USPS.
