Ethnographic Program:
The effects of globalization on the cultural, social, physical environment
are evident in the Bay Islands, an archipelago of cays and islands
that stretch from the North coast of Honduras in to the western
Caribbean Sea. The Bay Islands, once a British Crown Colony,
retain that legacy and contribute to the languages of the islands
that include English, Spanish, and Garifuna (a syncretized Arawak
language). As the island of Roatán, largest of the Bay Islands,
adapts to rapid environmental, social, demographic and economic
changes, peoples’ behaviors, beliefs and attitudes toward
foodways have also undergone change. The FGCU Ethnographic
Research Expedition in Roatán is focused on the causes, effects
and extent of that change. During our summer field session,
students will take part of an intensive Spanish language instruction.
Working under the supervision of faculty researchers students will
develop skills in anthropological research; collect, assess and
present ethnographic data, and immerse themselves in the life ways
of Roatán.
