The Campus Master Planning process is part of the larger Strategic Planning that takes place at the direction of Florida’s Board of Governors. Florida Gulf Coast University’s Master Plan addresses Urban Design, Land Use, Recreation and Open Space, and Academic and Support Facilities, among many other elements of long range planning.

FGCU MASTER PLAN 2010-2020 PRESENTED TO BOARD OF TRUSTEES ON APRIL 17, 2011.

The proposed Campus Master Plan has been transmitted to the intergovernmental review agencies identified in Section 1013.30 of the Florida Statutes. These agencies have conducted their reviews and provided comments to the University, which have now been incorporated in the Campus Master Plan Update 2010-2020, as of the week of April 2, 2012.

Second Public Hearing of the CMP: On April 17, 2012, the Board of Trustees will review the Campus Master Plan Update 2010-2020 for final acceptance. This review process is titled as the Second Public Hearing of the CMP, as required by Florida Statutes.

Architect – Astorino

Florida Gulf Coast University is required to update their master plan every 5 years to follow state statues required by law. The Master Plan will be updated in accordance with Section 1013.30, Florida Statute, and Florida Board of Governors Regulation Chapter 21.  Astorino is currently researching and analyzing data collected through the University faculty, staff, students and Facilities Office.  The project team is creating an online survey for Students, Faculty and Staff, that will be distributed in the fall.  This will provide valuable input that focuses on the University’s required elements that will help focus on the ways for the University to be successful in its physical growth and development.  Along with this research an Evaluation and Appraisal report is currently underway to document what has taken place in construction, academics, sports, conservation and other campus growth over the last five years.  With this information, it will guide the University and the team to understand the new goals and policies the University envisions for its future.

There are eight required Elements that must be included: Future Land Use, Transportation, Housing, General Infrastructure, Conservation, Recreation and Open Space, Intergovernmental Coordination, and Capital Improvements.  There are also ten optional elements that are included: Academic Mission, Academic Program, Urban Design, Academic Facilities, Support Facilities, Utilities, Architectural Guidelines, Landscape Guidelines, Facilities Maintenance, and Coastal Management. Each of these elements will have a number of goals, objectives and polices, that are recommended for achievement over the next five and ten year periods. The final comprehensive Campus Master Plan 2010-2020 document will fulfill the statutory requirements, and will determine the impacts to the Level of Service for utility services and roadways. This will assist FGCU by providing information for updating the Development Agreement between FGCU and Lee County.

Major components to be included will consist of storm water capacity/ conveyance/ management, chilled water capacity/conveyance, traffic/transportation/parking and campus way finding/signage studies. The plan must include goals for a sustainable campus, and include resolution of pedestrian, bike, parking, transit, and traffic issues.  It will also include a ten-year plan for major capital improvements that are necessary to accommodate the growth of the student population over the next ten years.
