DRUG EDUCATION


Who Do You Trust

Grades: 4-5

Students may wonder who to turn to when faced with pressure to try tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. This program emphasizes the fact that drugs are neither good nor bad, but their effects on the body can be helpful or harmful. Students will learn how the body systems are affected by drugs. Decision-making skills, drug recognition, alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, and other medicines are discussed. Students will practice refusal skills with Carlos the robot.

OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the program, the student will:

  1. Define "drug”
  2. Distinguish between stimulant drugs and depressant drugs
  3. Explain two ways alcohol, tobacco and inhalants can affect the body
  4. Demonstrate one way to handle peer pressure

Decisions: It’s Up to You

Grade: 6-8

This drug abuse prevention program discusses the pharmacological and physiological effects of drugs including marijuana and alcohol on the body systems. Young teens will receive information about the dangers of “street drugs” and exactly how drugs can change the body, so that they can make an informed choice when facing decisions about drug use. Immediate and long-term effects are discussed. The influences of the media on the decision-making process will also be explored.

OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the program, the student will:

  1. State the basic functions of the brain and nervous system.
  2. Define "drug”
  3. Differentiate between legal, illegal drugs, prescription and non-prescription drugs
  4. Identity two harmful effects of alcohol and marijuana
  5. Identify three sources of influence on one’s decision to use drugs

Binge Drinking - The Party's Over

Grade: 9-12

Students will explore the dangers of alcohol poisoning and binge drinking. Participants share in activities that help make the consequences of alcohol use more real. This presentation includes high impact video clips, emergency room footage and real interviews with teens. Interactive activities and demonstrations are presented.

OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of the program, the student will:
  1. Define binge drinking
  2. Identify alcohol as a depressant drug
  3. Define BAC, as the percentage of alcohol in the blood
  4. Recognize four danger signs of alcohol poisoning
  5. List four effects of alcohol on the central nervous system

Be In The "No"

Grades: 9-12

A straightforward discussion on the effects and dangers of heroin, methamphetamines, date rape and designer drugs. The abuse of prescription drugs including oxycontin and Ritalin is also explored. Drug tolerance and aspects ofdrug addiction along with tools for staying drug free are addressed. Features video clips and interactive activities.
