Internet Resources UNITED NATIONS Information on the United Nations is now available to the public through the Internet.
The UN home page on the Internet World Wide Web is set up under five thematic categories: Peace and Security, Economic and Social Development, International Law, Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs. A series of quick access points leads the user to detailed information on a number of topics including the various organs of the United nations, News, Documents, and Audio-visual Services. In addition, a hot-linked map of UN Web sites around the world provides connections to UN Offices and Agencies in various locations such as Geneva, Paris, Vienna and Tokyo, among others.
United Nations News and Documents are available on-line with many of the DPI Press Releases including Daily Highlights available before the printed version. The Daily Journal and Daily List of Documents are also featured in the Web site. The Publications and Sales area includes detailed listings of available sales publications, as well as the ability to place orders on-line. More maps, statistical data and cross-links make the entire site organized and user-friendly.
A new exciting addition to the home page is the United Nations CyberSchoolBus, an on-line educational service. The Web site includes an on-line database of over 30 fields of information for all UN Member States. A futuristic global gallery displays pictures from around the world. An on-line quiz provides valuable information and fun, as well as offering opportunities to win prizes.
The site also provides a discussion area for participants in a Model UN program. The Model UN Discussion Area (MUNDA) allows young people to exchange ideas and share information about Model UN conferences, global issues and research tips. MUNDA has two additional services: a) three advisors who check messages and respond to your questions; b) live chats with ambassadors and UN experts on a pre-arranged schedule.
InfoNation at the CyberSchoolBus site provides the most official and up-to-date global statistics on the web - or anywhere else. With an easy-to-use graphic interface, InfoNation puts you a few clicks away from the most important, basic data on countries of your choice, all tabulated and neatly laid out for you. InfoNation has 30 fields of data, from energy consumption and average temperature to life expectancy and newspaper circulation. InfoNation has data on all 185 member states of the UN. InfoNation also includes definitions of all terms.
The home page is also a place where you can send your questions and comments on the role and work of the United Nations.
Internet users may take advantage of the "Official Web Site Locator for the United Nations System of Organizations" which provides easy access to the Web sites of United Nations programs, as well as those of its specialized agencies, autonomous bodies and inter-agency coordination mechanisms and a number of other groups which deal with United Nations issues. The locator brings together an every-growing amount of information made available in recent years by nearly all United Nations bodies. Also listed are sites maintained by missions to the United Nations, as well by a number of non-United Nations bodies which provide reliable information on the United Nations system.
