5.3 Library Services and Support
Principle:
5.3.1 Provide library resources, reference services, and information literacy instruction appropriate to meet the needs of distance learners.
Practices:

A. Provide distance students with electronic course reserve materials.

Examples:

The Library provides course material on reserve, electronically. Students may retrieve course reserves at the FGCU Library web site. Students must use their user name and password to access electronic reserves. Faculty need to follow these steps to reserve electronic course materials:

1. Determine course needs for ordering electronic collections and journals. Consultation with a department head may be necessary when costs are involved.

2. Contact your college's designated resource librarian to facilitate resource location and scanning.

3. Requests for scanning and journal availability should be made four to six weeks prior to the semester.

B. Provide distance students with easy access to the library catalog.
Students may search library catalogs and databases.

Students need a NOTIS ID (14-digit number) to request certain databases and resource material on WebLUIS. Instructions for obtaining this ID number.

C. Provide distance students with easy access to the library reference and research assistance.

Students have access to a reference librarian via phone at 239-590-7630 or by completing a form at the "Ask a Question " web page.

A state-wide "Ask a Librarian" service
is available from 10 am - 10 pm (EST) M-F, and from 10 am - 5 pm Sat-Sun. This is a "live" chat service that services all state universities and community colleges. The librarians are from different higher educations institutions throughout the state of Florida.

Research assistance from the library at FGCU can be scheduled by completing an online form at the Library website.

E. Provide distance students with online request forms for journal articles/text.

The FGCU library provides students with remote access to full text journal articles.

Interlibrary loans can be arranged for any articles or books not held at FGCU.

F. Training and support are provided to students, faculty and staff regarding the use of print and electronic resources in the library.

The Library offers a series of short workshops on library research. Some are also available as tutorials on the library web site. Librarians provide subject guides that can be accessed through "Subject Guides" on the library web page. If any problems arise, call the library reference desk 239-590-7630.
