Notice was sent out in October for units to review and update =
assessment plans. Units were also requested to report on progress on =
implementation of assessment plans in their mid-year reports.
LRPIEC held a meeting of its full body in October and appointed a =
steering committee and a working group to develop a supplement to the =
strategic plan for the development of regional centers. The working =
group has met four times to develop the plan's initial draft.
The first academic program review for the B.S. in Legal Studies =
under the enhanced process is progressing according to schedule. Other =
will go into self-study later this year, including the general education =
program.
Progress on the annual report cycle is proceeding. Currently, =
mid-year reports are being compiled and sessions have been scheduled to =
begin completion of annual reports in January.

evaluations in all IDS 3920 University Colloquium sections for summer =
and fall 2005 included a group of questions designed specifically to =
measure the two learning outcomes that are the focus of the QEP. In fall =
2005, these questions were also included for all sections of IDS 1301L =
Styles & Ways of Learning and IDS 2110 Connections
- Negotiations to use the ELCAI have been underway. One pilot test =
with a small sample of IDS 1301L students (2 sections, approximately 45 =
students) was undertaken in November/December 2005. The ELCAI will be =
implemented in Spring 2006 for all sections of IDS 3920 University =
Colloquium.
- The Community Service Attitudes Scale has been revised to reflect =
FGCU=E2=80=99s definition of service-learning (as opposed to community =
service) and will be implemented in Spring 2006 for all sections of IDS =
3920 University Colloquium.

- Initial measures to increase the consistency of delivery for IDS =

learning outcomes as mandatory for course completion.

- The Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Michael Savarese, was hired =
in August, 2005.
- The Office of Graduate Admissions was moved to the Office of =
Graduate Studies, along with its associated budget.=C2=A0 Savarese is =
serving as Graduate Admissions=E2=80=99 supervisor and is overseeing =
three full-time employees and one 10-hour per week OPS student =
assistant:
- Ms. Jennifer Gjini, formerly an OPS employee and now an A&P =
employee serving as the Office=E2=80=99s Coordinator, organizes and =
implements special events and projects, oversees the office=E2=80=99s =
budget, travel, and purchasing, assists with the processing and =
distribution of applications, and assists with our Awareness =
Campaign.
- Ms. Ana Hill is our Graduate Admissions Officer and processes all =
incoming applications.=C2=A0 In addition, she is working to develop our =
online application process and to improve and implement our =
communication plan with programs and applicants.
- The Assistant Director for Graduate Studies, Mr. Kevin Hunter, was =
hired in February, 2006.=C2=A0 The Assistant Director is overseeing =
Graduate Admissions and is helping with graduate student recruitment =
efforts and policy development for the University.
- A 10-hour per week student OPS assistant is being hired at the time =
of this report=E2=80=99s creation.=C2=A0 The OPS assistant will work the =
front desk and phone to respond to inquiries and help in the processing =
and distribution of applications.=C2=A0 The latter is to ensure that =
program=E2=80=99s are receiving application materials in a timely =
manner.=C2=A0 The OPS person will remain with us until June 30.=C2=A0 =
For July 1, 2006, we are hoping to hire a permanent, half-time OPS =
assistant.
- The Graduate Studies Office held a planning retreat on March 3 =
(report available upon request).=C2=A0 =
During that day-long meeting, the Office=E2=80=99s objectives for the =
next year were identified and prioritized.=C2=A0 In addition, our =
respective roles and responsibilities were defined.
- The current status of graduate education and enrollment was =
assessed through a series of debriefing meetings held between Graduate =
Studies and the five Colleges during the months of September and =
October.=C2=A0 The status was assessed further through the strategic =
planning process (see next bulleted item).
- First drafts of College- and Program-level graduate education =
strategic plans were submitted from all Colleges and Programs in late =
November.=C2=A0 Those plans were reviewed by Savarese and the Academic =
Affairs staff, suggested changes and additions were made, and the =
revised, final plans were resubmitted in late January.=C2=A0 The =
information contained in the plans was used to compile a graduate =
student funding proposal for each of the Colleges.=C2=A0 Those funding =
proposals, which recommend funding levels for instate and out-of-state =
tuition waivers and graduate assistant stipends, are presently under =
consideration by the University=E2=80=99s senior administrative =
staff.
- To help programs achieve recruitment benchmarks, 3 funded =
=E2=80=9Crecruitment initiatives=E2=80=9D were implemented in the fall: =
(1) faculty recruitment travel; (2) support of on-campus interviews for =
prospective graduate students; and (3) graduate student research =
assistantship awards.=C2=A0 All three provide opportunities to promote =
recruitment in all programs within all Colleges.=C2=A0 (Details are =
available upon request.)
- A number of university-wide recruitment events were conducted: the =
Fall Harvest, an on-campus event for prospective graduate students; and =
we attended 6 recruitment fairs at Universities across Florida during =
the fall semester.
- A Graduate Studies =E2=80=9CAwareness Campaign=E2=80=9D was =
proposed, funded (at $60,000), and planned beginning in late =
January.=C2=A0 Development of the marketing materials is underway (proposal available upon request).
- A new policy has been drafted, for BOT approval, to permit the =
charging of instate tuition for out-of-state graduate students enrolled =
in distance learning courses.=C2=A0 If approved, this should boost FTEs =
in DL courses considerably.=C2=A0 The policy is expected to go to the =
BOT in either April or June, 2006.

- Our enrollment =
targets after the Spring, 2006 graduate admissions were met.
- The number of =
received applications to date is at or slightly exceeds the number of =
applications received at this time last academic year.=C2=A0 We =
presently lack data on the number of admitted students for Summer and =
Fall, 2006; applications are still being processed the graduate =
programs.
- Data were compiled to =
assess the level of participation in the Fall Harvest and at the =
recruitment fairs.=C2=A0 This information, however, reflects prospective =
student interest and not enrollment.
- The first drafts of =
the strategic plans were reviewed extensively and Colleges were provided =
with lengthy critiques for improvement.=C2=A0 Unfortunately, not many =
significant changes were made to produce the final drafts.=C2=A0 A =
better, enforceable process must be developed for the subsequent =
year.
- A plan has been =
developed to assess the effectiveness of the Awareness Campaign and it =
will be implemented this month.
- Under the leadership =
of Kevin Hunter, the Office is now: tracking all inquiries, tracking our =
application and admissions results, and monitoring the effectiveness of =
our recruitment efforts.

- The recruitment =
initiatives, recruitment events, and awareness campaign, all described =

in History; MS in Criminal Forensic Studies, and the EDD/EDS in =

graduate student support proposals for next academic =

- The strategic =
planning process was developed for multiple purposes: to provide vision =
and direction to Colleges for future and existing programs, to develop =
reasonable and affordable enrollment targets, to assess resource needs =
to support the implementation of their graduate programs and their =
graduate students, and to develop best practices for recruitment of =
students.=C2=A0 Not all these aspects were achieved well by the plan for =
two reasons.=C2=A0 One, the structure of the template is somewhat =
ambiguous and requires clarification, and two, not all Colleges and =
Programs worked earnestly to craft the most helpful plans.=C2=A0 The =
template will be revised for next year, and a more persuasive approach =
will be implemented to better ensure compliance.
- Nonetheless, the =
strategic planning process was effective in generating enrollment =
targets and graduate student support needs.=C2=A0 For the latter, a fair =
process now exists for the dispersal of graduate student support =
funds.=C2=A0 In previous years, such a process did not =
exist.
- Self-assessment and =
feedback from programs concerning the effectiveness of our communication =
plan has resulted in the plan=E2=80=99s modification.=C2=A0 Better =
communication now exists among our Office, applicants, and the graduate =
programs.

review by staff members in the Office of Admissions (for undergraduates) =
has led to an acceleration of an online application for Graduate =
