What=C2=A0actions have been taken to attain this =
goal?
CHP faculty and staff have addressed the goals of achieving =
academic excellence by building a qualified faculty and attracting =
qualified students to existing programs. In addition, the CHP has =
proposed new programs and concentrations to meet community needs.
=C2=A0
Overall, CHP enrollment grew 17% in the last year, by far its =
greatest growth since FGCU opened. Between August 2004-5, CHP upper =
division course enrollment increased by 59% to 105 =
FTE.=C2=A0Undergraduate IHS courses increased FTE 26% in that period, =
reflecting a 30% increase in nursing,=C2=A0community health, and human =
performance enrollment. Graduate enrollment=C2=A0was affected by =
dissolution of FGCU's partnership with=C2=A0Norman R. =
Wolford=C2=A0School of Nurse Anesthesia in 2006. Graduate FTE declined =
30.5% from=C2=A057.9 FTE=C2=A0in August 2004 to=C2=A040.4 FTE in August =
2005.=C2=A0The SON actively pursued developing a graduate specialization =
in nurse anesthesia and expects to enroll students in January 2007, =
increasing graduate FTE by 20 in the first year.
=C2=A0
Online enrollment in CHP is 21% of the total enrollment for the =
university at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Despite =
interruptions from hurricanes, online courses remain in demand and fill =
before face-2-face sections of the same course. Two new programs =
proposed by the Division of Health Science are online programs. The =
RN/BSN program is also available online.=C2=A0
Specific=C2=A0efforts include the following actions:
- Program admission committees have adhered to admission standards and =
developed early admission strategies to capture the best qualified =
students earlier in the admission process. CHP has also targeted =
marketing efforts.
- We actively market and revise our graduate programs to FGCU =
graduates and local and regional healthcare organizations.
- All programs review and revise courses continuously to meet the goal =
of serving diverse populations in the changing demographic of SW =
Florida.
- CHP supports faculty who are pursuing their doctoral degrees in =
terms of workload expectations. The State of Florida provided tuition =
waivers for graduate study. FGCU also provides professional development =
grants. In 2006, three (3) CHP faculty applied for a professional =
development grants to support their dissertation work.
- CHP hired a=C2=A0second Athletic Training faculty to satisfy=C2=A0AT =
Accreditation Standards. An AT consultant with site visit credentials =
was hired to review the revised self-study and conduct a pre-site visit =
survey with AT faculty.
- The College and ORSP supported faculty in developing grant proposals =
through consultation on design and statistical analysis and financial =
support. CHP initiated the Research Circle to further support faculty =
interest and expertise in research design and evaluation methods.
- The School of Nursing (SON)=C2=A0developed Early Decision Admission =
Criteria for FGCU pre-nursing students to capture the best and brightest =
students and increased the admission GPA to 3.0 for FTIN =
applicants.

What measures have you taken towards assessment of this =
goal?
- Each program=C2=A0maintains detailed databases on applicant pools =
and current students, examining the qualifications of the applicant pool =
and=C2=A0student success indicators=C2=A0to inform marketing efforts and =
selection criteria. Faculty will monitor the effects of changes in =
admission criteria and curricula using the data on student =
outcomes.
- Each program examined its curricular content and practice =
assignments for diversity. Clinical experiences=C2=A0are evaluated =
for=C2=A0inclusion of diverse populations.
- Faculty members submit=C2=A0an annual report that provides data on =
degree completion, licensure, continuing professional development, =
course development, student evaluations of teaching, research, and =
service outcomes.
- The AT program was reviewed by an AT accreditation consultant in =
preparation for a site visit in Spring 2006.
- Early Admission Applications for SON were monitored.
- Faculty Annual Reports will be submitted by April =
30th.

- SON: 10 alumni admitted.
- SHR: Health Science admitted four (4) alumni to its graduate =
program. OT admitted=C2=A0 seven (7) alumni to the MS entry level =
program and one (1) to the post-professional program. PT doubled the =
number of alumni applicants. PT applications rose 30% from =
2003-2005.
- All senior students now complete a community project related to =
proposals submitted by community partners. A number of them prepared =
posters presented at the 2005 FGCU Research Day.
- The following faculty achievements indicate CHP is on target in =
achieving its goal of increasing the level of research expertise among =
the faculty:
- Kathy Swanick completed her DPT=C2=A0from Russell Sage =
College=C2=A0University and continues progress on her EdD from Capella =
University.
- Ellen Williamson is preparing for comprehensive exams at USF.
- Tom Bevins is preparing for comprehensive exams at USF.
- Doug Morris has had his dissertation committee approved by Touro =
University.
- Four nursing=C2=A0faculty are currently enrolled in doctoral =
programs.
- Dr. Marydelle Polk and Dr. Elizabeth Murray were among the first =
nurse educators in the US to be certified by AACN.
- Michelle Angeletti received certification as a Lactation =
Consultant.
- Pam St. Laurent is enrolled in a graduate certificate program in =
the=C2=A0COE.
- Accreditation of the Athletic Training program: The Site Visit was =
completed on April 3 and 4, 2006.=C2=A0=C2=A0
- The SON received 30 applications for early admission; 19 =
applicants=C2=A0were invited and have=C2=A0accepted a place in the class =
entering in Fall 2006. The remaining 11 had <3.2 GPA or outstanding =
prerequisites and will be reviewed in the regular applicant pool.
- In the period under review, CHP hosted=C2=A0one (1) Research Circle =
for faculty. Evaluation of the session was very positive. A second =
Research Circle is planned this semester. During 2005-6, Dr. Linda =
Buettner submitted three (3) grant proposals to federal, state, county, =
and private agencies. They are pending.

Efforts to attract qualified students appear to be effective. The =
Division of Health Science has determined that students with lower GPAs =
have difficulty completing the program in a timely manner. =
Faculty=C2=A0are contemplating raising the admission GPA for Fall =
2007.=C2=A0
The number of early decision applicants to the SON confirms the =
merit of drawing the most qualified FGCU students from the applicant =
pool to keep the best and brightest here.
Community agencies submitted over 40 Senior Seminar proposals in =
2005 that continue to generate projects for interdisciplinary groups of =
students and increase agency support for future faculty research.
Assessment of the continuing need for a nurse anesthesia program =
resulted in development of a proposal and business plan for the FGCU =
nurse anesthesia concentration.
Assessment of enrollment trends in BSC 1085C and 1086C resulted in =
expanded offerings for Summer C in 2005.

Given the demographics of SW Florida and the need for specific =
healthcare personnel, the University and the College=C2=A0have taken the =
following actions:
- FGCU dedicated a pool of money to support development activities =
for=C2=A0an FGCU=C2=A0CRNA concentration in the MSN program. CHP =
conducted=C2=A0a national search for the Director. The SON solicited =
Affiliates=C2=A0to commit to accepting=C2=A0the number of anesthesia =
residents needed to make the program viable. That number is now 21 each =
year.
- The Division of Health Science prepared the template for curricular =
review at department, college, and university level for the Long Term =
Care=C2=A0Administration Program and Dementia Care Manager certificate =
program.
- The Division of Health Sciences examined existing dietetics programs =
in the State of Florida and contacted the American Dietetic Association =
for accreditation information. CHP explored perceived community need in =
focus groups.
- CHP and the Kleist Health Education Center developed a course in =
health and wellness for lower division FGCU students.
- CHP explored online graduate courses currently available from the =
American Association of Health Educators with them=C2=A0and the =
opportunity to develop the Health Education post-graduate certificate at =
FGCU.
- The SON completed development of the Clinical Nurse Leader pilot =
with Lee Memorial Health System and the Adult Nurse Practitioner MSN =
Specialty to offer new options for graduate study and increase =
enrollment.
- The SON completed development of the curriculum for the Accelerated =
Second Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
- CHP leadership negotiated with community donors to support the =
salary and benefits for a Director of the FGCU Clinical Laboratory =
Science program for three (3) years.

guarantee residency placements for 21 students in Year 1 and 21 students =
in Year 2.=C2=A0The search for an Assistant Program Director is in =
progress. The SON maintained contact with approximately 400 RNs =
interested in applying to the CRNA concentration for January 2007.
- The Long Term Care (LTC) and Dementia Care =
Manager=C2=A0proposals=C2=A0have been reviewed and approved by the =
department and the=C2=A0college. Both are currently =
under=C2=A0university review. We hope to offer=C2=A0both in Fall =
2006.
- Because the American Dietetics Association has placed a moratorium =
on new program accreditation, the planning process has been deferred =
until the Association concludes its deliberations on entry level. =
Anticipated completion: Fall 2007.
- KHEC staff have developed and offered a health and wellness course =
for undergraduate students;=C2=A034 enrolled in Spring =
2006.

- CHP leadership determined the Long Term Care Management Program and =

The Deans' Office regularly identifies research and grant =
opportunities and refers them to individual faculty or teams with common =
interests. The Office has also committed salary savings to support a =
research project in the Department of Physical Therapy. The Dean =
regularly communicates with area agency leaders to increase their =
understanding of the need to build research capacity in the healthcare =
community.
- CHP instituted=C2=A0a series of Research Circle presentations.
- CHP administration actively networks CHP faculty with community =
leaders in agencies that have research potential. Invited faculty to =
meet with Health Department staff to discuss opportunities for joint =
research efforts and is constituting an interdisciplinary team of CHP =
faculty interested in program evaluation to assist community agencies in =
grant applications and implementation..
- Dr. Linda Martin and Dean Heinemann=C2=A0serve on the FGCU =
Institutional Review Board; the Dean is=C2=A0Co-Chair.
- Dr. Anne Nolan (SON)=C2=A0co-chairs the Lee Memorial Health System =
Research Council and is a consultant for research activities in all =
three of the systems facilities.
- The Dean and Dr. Martin serve as reviewer for NIH applications (SBIR =
and HRSA).
- In PT, students and faculty mentors are engaged in 35 independent =
scholarly projects.

department decided to withdraw it application for accreditation. The =
report of the Athletic Training=C2=A0accreditation site visit =
on=C2=A0April 3 and 4, 2006 will be reviewed by the CAATE in July =

The Physical Therapy program is currently preparing their =
self-study for a Fall 2006 site visit.
The School of Nursing prepared the Self-Study for the Nurse =
Anesthesia Program site visit scheduled for May 23 and 24, =
2006.

How were the results of the assessment used to improve =
programs or services?
Program Assessment and Data Analysis Reporting informed review of =
the curricula and changes in courses, e.g., in the undergraduate nursing =
program, a second bachelor's program proposal has progressed through the =
curricular process and is ready for university review. SON faculty also =
reviewed UG courses for diversity content.

As a result of the AT Site visit in Spring 2005, a second qualified =
faculty member was recruited and hired for Fall 2005 and the =
deficiencies addressed by the faculty team. A consultant conducted a =
pre-site visit analysis of the revised self-study. The consultant worked =
with faculty and determined areas where additional explanation of =
teaching methods and student assessment were=C2=A0detailed for=C2=A0the =
Spring 2006 visit. In summary, her expectation was that the program =
meets the standards and should experience a successful visit. =

ORDER OF PRIORITY are essential to continued enrollment growth and =
quality programming across the college. Salary figures do not include =
benefits.=C2=A0
=C2=A0
- Develop 2500 sq. ft of new=C2=A0practice =
laboratory space for Human Performance. Current space on loan from =
Naples Community Hospital Health System=C2=A0will no longer be available =
in 2006-7. Options include using=C2=A0a trailer, acquiring dedicated =
space in the Stadium, or converting the multi-purpose room in the Kleist =
Health Education Center to a practice space. The latter =
will not meet the long-term for contiguous classroom/lab space. Cost to =
move donated equipment to campus. $3000 and storage space.
- Continued support for adjunct faculty: In =
2005-6, we estimate spending $200,111. New programming and growth in =
enrollment will require a 20% increase in that amount to =
$240,000.
- Create a budget item for replacement of capital =
equipment=C2=A0in=C2=A0practice labs that is now almost 10 years old. =
All accreditation site visit teams have raised this issue over the =
course of the College's history, expressing surprise that there is no =
budget item for replacement of used or outdated equipment.=C2=A0$ 30,000 =
in 2006-7.=C2=A0
- Hire one (1) senior secretary position to support the Health Science =
Division because it=C2=A0 will house the Clinical Laboratory Science =
(CLS) program currently funded for three (3) years by community partners =
(July 1, 2006 through=C2=A0June 30, 2009). The CLS program requires =
national accreditation with its concomitant needs for staff support. In =
addition,=C2=A0 enrollment in the division=C2=A0is growing. $ =
30,000.
- Upgrade Wanda Smith to Office Manager for the School of Health and =
Rehabilitation to address growth in graduate enrollment and articulation =
with the Office of Graduate Studies. $ 5,000.
- Add=C2=A01.0 FTE Health Services =
Administration Faculty to deal with current enrollment growth and plan =

heavy load and also serves as Associate Dean for Curriculum and =
