The Next Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) for FGCU

According to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), “submitted four to six weeks in advance of the on-site review by the Commission, is a document developed by the institution that (1) includes a process identifying key issues emerging from institutional assessment, (2) focuses on learning outcomes and/or the environment supporting student learning and accomplishing the mission of the institution, (3) demonstrates institutional capability for the initiation, implementation, and completion of the QEP, (4) includes broad-based involvement of institutional constituencies in the development and proposed implementation of the QEP, and (5) identifies goals and a plan to assess their achievement. The QEP should be focused and succinct.”

Florida Gulf Coast University has selected Writing, Critical Thinking, and Information Literacy as the general topics for our QEP. Over the next year and a half, faculty, staff, and students will work together to develop a focus for our plan.

This process will include developing a shared understanding of Critical Thinking, Writing, and Information Literacy within the context of FGCU’s Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles, with outcomes that are scaled (across four years of college) and that are broad enough to be adopted in disciplinary programs. We will also emphasize the role of assessment for continuous improvement: that is, the focus that we create for our plan must be assessable in meaningful and sustainable ways so that we can demonstrate an improvement in student learning.

The end result of our QEP will be the creation of a curriculum, a set of programs and projects, an enhancement of offices and centers (such as the writing center) that will improve student learning in relation to Writing, Critical Thinking, and Information Literacy. We may also create training modules, professional development opportunities, and other mechanisms whereby the resources needed for the plan will be available. QEPs sometimes lead to new faculty and staff positions that are necessary to implement the plan. All of the work writing the plan and creating the implementation process and the budget will occur during the 2013-2014 academic year.

Finally, our philosophy is to share, share, share in order to get input, involvement, and feedback and to make this FGCU’s Quality Enhancement Plan.
