Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education Changes Admission Requirements
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education has revised its admission requirements for both undergraduate and graduate programs to make the programs more accessible and to address the looming shortage of teachers, administrators and counselors in the region and nation. The revisions become effective Fall 2001.
SAT and ACT scores are no longer required to enter the College of Education undergraduate programs. Undergraduate students interested in becoming special education, elementary education or early childhood education teachers can gain admission when they have completed state prescribed general education, writing and computation, and prerequisite courses, pass the CLAST exam, and present a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.
The minimum score of 1000 on the GRE or 60 on the Miller Analogies test for applicants to graduate programs in the College of Education will only apply to those who do not have either a prior graduate degree or a 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate study. All applicants must, however, take one of the admissions tests and present a score. This admissions change affects master’s degree programs in educational leadership, educational technology, elementary education, mental health or school counseling, reading, and special education as well as a new program beginning in the fall in secondary education for students who have undergraduate degrees in biology, English, mathematics, social sciences or related fields of study.
Students will find their transition to teacher education smoother with the new changes in admission requirements.
