Education Doctoral Students in Five Counties Visit Legislative Session
FORT MYERS, FL -During the first week of April, 19 enthusiastic doctoral students from five counties in Southwest Florida will visit the state capitol in Tallahassee to participate in the legislative process as part of their coursework in the Ed.D. degree program on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus. Armed with years of education and experience in K-12 schools, community colleges, universities and other social agencies, these professionals comprise the third cohort of students in the University of Central Florida at FGCU doctorate degree program in education.
Their three-day visit is part of the Politics, Governance and Financing of Educational Organizations course taught by Professor Jess House. This course, like the other courses in this doctoral program, is provided by UCF on the FGCU campus through a unique partnership arrangement.
The group is now collecting and studying legislative priorities and talking with officials in the five county school districts, Edison Community College and FGCU. They are also taking a close look at what to expect when they arrive in Tallahassee by reviewing Governor Jeb Bush’s State of the State address and Commissioner Charlie Crist’s Education Reform proposal, among other fast developing news from the 2001 legislative session.
Legislative and other state education contacts are now being established for the April visit.
