FGCU Invites Public to Presentation of Pulitzer-Winning Play, “W;t”
FORT MYERS, FL - Nursing students and faculty at the Florida Gulf Coast University School of Nursing are joining forces with the Southwest Regional Medical Center to sponsor the Florida Repertory Theatre in the production of “W;t,” a Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Margaret Edson that confronts the reality of dying from cancer and doing so with dignity and honor. Performances begin Friday, March 16 and run through Sunday, April 8 at the Ft. Myers Arcade Theatre.
The humorous but honest and thought-provoking play portrays the story of Dr. Vivian Bearing, Ph.D., a highly respected professor of 17th century poetry and John Donne expert diagnosed with late stage ovarian cancer.
While going through treatment that makes her sicker than the disease, she recognizes she must rely on her wit - her ability to find amusement in seemingly dissimilar things.
Her thoughts lead her down the path of realization that her restrained, predictable life is the opposite of her unrestrained, unpredictable cancer. As she goes through the therapy process, her appreciation for the Donne sonnets blossoms when she comes to understand they are not just intellectual food to be spoon-fed by English teachers like her.
FGCU School of Nursing students and faculty will lead discussion groups and answer questions from the audience about cancer after the play. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as the guided discussions that will be led by knowledgeable professionals after the play.
