FGCU Renaissance Academy Offers Summer Program at Moorings Park
5/17/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Renaissance Academy welcomes friends and new faces to its College3 summer program at Moorings
Park in Naples. On select days in June, this program consists of three diverse and unique glimpses into the world of art, environment and
computers.

"History of Art: The Renaissance" goes beyond outside observation. Attendees will take a contextual look into the historical, economical,
scientific and religious backgrounds of each renaissance piece, enriching the depth of study and understanding. FGCU assistant professor Dr. Joel Hollander will teach the course from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on four consecutive Mondays starting June 4.

"The Natural History of South Florida" is the second offering of the College3 summer series. People living in South Florida cohabit with an array of wildlife and plants. Focusing on a different ecosystem each week, the class will take field trips to areas of interest around South Florida. FGCU Eminent Scholar Dr. Jerome Jackson will instruct the classes from 10 a.m. to
noon on the same Mondays.

The third program is the curriculum "Trends in Computing Technologies." This course focuses on new technology including the World Wide Web, digital cameras and scanners, computer video, palm computers, MP3s, instant messaging, and a look into the future of computers. Individuals will be shown an array of new ideas and technology that will sharpen their skills. FGCU Small Business Development Center Coordinator of Educational/Training Programs Stephen Schonberg will conduct the course from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on four consecutive Thursdays beginning June 7.

FGCU created the Renaissance Academy on the premise that learning should never stop and that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and
culturally active enhances the quality of life for those over the age of 50. FGCU, an accredited comprehensive public university created to address the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and dedicated to providing a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities, offers the Renaissance Academy as part of the University's commitment to serving the region.

The fee for each course is $35 for Renaissance Academy members and $50 for all others. Space is limited and early registration is advised.
Participants may register up to and including the first day of class, space permitting.
