Remembering a Public Servant: FGCU and Lee County Establish Cpl. Alfredo Banos Scholarship Fund
7/6/2001

FORT MYERS, FL. – Lee County deputy Alfredo Baņos will be long remembered at Florida Gulf Coast University for his dedication, leadership and service to the area. Today, FGCU President William C. Merwin signed an agreement with Lee County Sheriff Rod Shoap to establish an endowed scholarship in Baņos’ name that seals his memory forever with the University and the community.

“He was the best of the best,” Shoap said to the crowd of department law enforcers, staff members and volunteers, and FGCU students, administrators and staff who gathered for the historical event.

“I want to show you some of the people he touched,” Shoap said solemnly just before he called several teary-eyed department staffers, three deputies and a detective to the front of the room. “These are the people he touched.”

Lee County deputies and staff members joined with members of the community to begin the scholarship fund in memory of Baņos after he died Jan. 20 in a car accident east of I-75 on Corkscrew Road. The community responded with donations totaling $20,000 to start the fund. The State of Florida Ethics in Business Scholarship Program matched the fund with another $20,000.

Baņos’ devotion was well respected and known in south Lee County. So much so, that the Bonita Springs Optimist Club honored him with its “Deputy of the Year” award in 1996.

Graduates from any high school in Lee County who reside in south Lee, demonstrate a commitment to community service, have financial need and enroll in a course on business ethics are eligible for the scholarship.
