FGCU Names Deiros First Softball Coach
7/19/2001

FORT MYERS, FL – Today, Florida Gulf Coast University named David Deiros as its first softball coach. Formerly the head softball coach at Gulf Coast High School in Naples, Deiros will begin his duties at FGCU on August 15. Intercollegiate softball play will begin at FGCU in fall 2002.

“We are thrilled to have someone with Dave’s background join our staff,” FGCU Athletics Director Carl McAloose said. “I’ve always said that coaches are teachers and Dave is an outstanding educator. He will bring local experience and a great deal of enthusiasm to our staff. I have confidence that Dave will attract the type of student-athlete who will be outstanding representatives of FGCU. I believe these young women will learn a great deal under Dave’s guidance and will become very well rounded individuals.”

Deiros has been a science teacher and coach for the last eight years. He is currently an adjunct chemistry instructor at Edison Community College and a chemistry and physics instructor at GCHS. As one of the first coaches hired at GCHS, Deiros played an integral role in designing their facilities, purchasing equipment and uniforms, scheduling opponents and raising funds. His team compiled a 55-35 record in his three years at GCHS, while winning a district championship in 1999 and competing in the regional final in 2001. He also served as an assistant football coach.

Prior to starting the program at GCHS, Deiros was the head coach at Lely High School in Naples. He posted a 61-32 record in three seasons and coached his team to a regional championship and the state finals in 1998. He was also an assistant baseball coach and chemistry teacher while at Lely.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family,” said Coach Deiros. “I love coaching softball and now I have an opportunity to pursue that at the next level – plus, I get to do this in Southwest Florida, the place that we have called home for the last 10 years. Florida Gulf Coast University's softball program will benefit greatly from the tremendous amount of talented student-athletes in South Florida as well as the enthusiastic community supports.”

Deiros earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of South Florida in 1989 and a master’s degree from the University of Miami in 1991. He and his wife Jennifer reside in Naples with their one year-old son, Eric David.

As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the public. Only four years old, FGCU opened its doors to students for the first time in 1997. FGCU currently sponsors men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf. Men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball will begin intercollegiate play in fall 2002.
