FGCU Reacts to Tuesday's Terrorist Attacks
FORT MYERS, FL -Florida Division of Colleges and Universities Chancellor Carl Blackwell told Florida Gulf Coast University President William C. Merwin - as he did all of Florida’s university presidents - that Dr. Merwin has authorization to do what he thinks is best in terms of closing FGCU tomorrow.
FGCU is canceling all campus activities and events for the rest of Tuesday and an Athletics luncheon scheduled for noon Wednesday that included the media. The University asks students and employees to stay tuned to local news media or call the main FGCU phone number at (941) 590-1000 for updated information.
No threats have been made to any building in Florida at this time but due to events happening around the country, Governor Jeb Bush has decided to evacuate the Capitol Building and the Turlington Building. According to Chancellor Blackwell, orders also include curtailing travel plans for the next two days.
FGCU is offering emotional and spiritual counseling services to students, employees and the community of Southwest Florida. FGCU has several professional, licensed counselors and campus ministers available for guidance. Call (941) 281-6454 for a list of available counselors.
Cafeteria food services at FGCU will be available tomorrow.
FGCU University Police and Safety is directing people seeking information on relatives and friends in the trauma areas to the American Red Cross, which is acting as the central information gathering point. Red Cross officials are collecting necessary contact information and will pass along messages to the affected areas for resolution once the situation is somewhat clearer. Phone circuits to the affected areas are busy and likely to be reserved to emergency operations. FGCU University Police and Safety is also encouraging the campus community to donate blood at area blood centers.
