Blane De St. Croix Exhibit at FGCU Art Gallery
FORT MYERS, FL - Internationally recognized artist, Blane De St. Croix, is exhibiting "Recent Work: Objects and Constructions" in the FGCU Library Art Gallery from October 28, through November 25, 2001. An Opening Reception is Sunday, October 28 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. the artist speaks informally about his work.
The exhibition includes large-scale drawings, bronze castings, an installation work on environmental issues, and a narrative floor sculpture created especially for the exhibition with FGCU art students. De St. Croix is currently associate professor of sculpture at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL.
De St. Croix’s work is lyrical and beautifully crafted, gently but insistently engaging issues of human interaction in natural, social, and historical environments. Whether presenting a visual catalog of vanishing species or exploring the complexities of human communication, the objects remind us of things we either take for granted, or would probably choose to forget. His evocative installations focus attention on De St. Croix’s choice of earthy materials such as twigs, earth, leaves, clay, and straw that have been bound together with care and skill. His cast metal pieces, done recently during a residency at the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, WI, translate the delicacy of flower petals into the permanence of bronze. His drawings, often wall sized, use a range of materials from the tradition to the unconventional.
As part of a four-day residency at FGCU, Blane De St. Croix will be discussing his work with students and the general public at a slide lecture at 4:00 p.m., Friday, October 26 in Griffin Hall, room 215. The community is invited to take advantage of this opportunity to speak directly with the artist about the development of his work over time. In addition to the lecture, Professor De St. Croix will work closely with FGCU art students and faculty on the installation of the exhibition, and will build a site-specific piece for the show with students from the FGCU Sculpture Workshop class.
All events in the FGCU Library Art Gallery are open free of charge to the public. The FGCU Library Art Gallery is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sundays. The Gallery will be closed Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving week.
