Opening Reception Kicks Off the Fall 2001 Juried Student Art Exhibit
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will kick-off the Fall 2001 Juried Student Art Exhibit with a public reception honoring the artists from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6 in the FGCU Library Gallery. Students will exhibit about 80 works in various media through Sunday, December 16.
"The juried student shows make visible to our community the energy, talent and creativity that our students possess," said associate professor and gallery director, Morgan T. Paine. "The range of ideas, materials and styles on display reflects positively on the teaching and learning that is occurring on a daily basis in the University's classrooms and studios."
Two-dimensional works exhibited will include drawings, paintings and mixed media pieces. Three-dimensional works will be in clay and other media. FGCU faculty jurors Tricia Fay, Paine and Carl Schwartz will select the show from approximately 200 entries. A continuous computer display, the "Digital Salon des Refuse," will showcase all work submitted to the exhibition but not selected by the jury.
The present FGCU art gallery is located in the University's Library building. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
Construction is underway on the University's permanent art gallery, which is part of a $7 million, 30,000 square-foot art and music complex scheduled to open in fall 2002. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the public. The Department of Art has more than 60 undergraduate art majors.
