FGCU Makes History: Breaks Ground on Sports Complex, Unveils Official Athletic Logo
10/22/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Today, Florida Gulf Coast University made history when President William C. Merwin and Athletic Director Carl McAloose broke ground for the soon-to-be-built sports complex and unveiled the University’s new official athletic logo.

FGCU students, faculty and staff were joined by several key community supporters, student-athletes and members of the media near Athletics’ temporary offices to break ground on what will eventually be the University’s sports complex and athletics’ permanent home.

Plans include a teaching gymnasium, natatorium, wellness center, baseball and softball facilities, and administrative offices. FGCU currently has 12 lighted tennis courts, intramural and recreational fields, sand volleyball courts, and outdoor basketball courts. Later plans include additional facilities for soccer, an outdoor track and field area, and a cross-country course.

FGCU expects the new sports complex, its growing intercollegiate athletics programs, camps and special events will draw tens of thousands of people from the community and beyond to the campus every year. Activities that take place at the new sports complex will have an impact on enrollment by attracting prospective students and their parents to FGCU campus. The new sports complex will be the single most-used facility on the campus by students, student-athletes and the community. Examples of planned use include:

NCAA, NAIA and AAU sanctioned events and championships at the local, state, regional, conference, national and international levels

Training site for professional and amateur sports

An auxiliary site for international teams to prepare for competition, such as the Olympics

Community events for all ages, including high school athletics, summer camps, swimming programs, fitness/wellness programs, clinics, seminars, marching band, cheerleader and JROTC drill competitions, and state social studies and science fairs

University graduation and convocation ceremonies

Teaching in the areas of fitness, wellness, athletic skills, coaching, athletics administration, sports management, first aid and safety, and a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness center
Concerts and entertainment events

An expanded intramural program as well as planned and open recreational activities
A wide variety of intercollegiate athletic practices and events

FGCU started intercollegiate play last fall with men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis. FGCU will begin play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s cross-country in fall 2002. The new gymnasium will open October 2002.

Immediately following the ground breaking ceremony, FGCU unveiled the University’s new official athletic logo - a blue and green portrayal of a fierce eagle ready to pounce and perched atop the written moniker “Eagles.”
