Southwest Florida, FGCU Asked to Host 2002 National Tennis Championships
FORT MYERS, FL - Southwest Florida has a chance to boost its tourism, but for it to become a reality, Florida Gulf Coast University needs support from the community. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics wants FGCU and Southwest Florida to host the May 2002 NAIA Men's and Women's National Tennis Championships. The event will bring 48 men's and women's teams to Southwest Florida and many additional guests including relatives, friends, college administrators and tennis enthusiasts.
"This would be a great event for all of Southwest Florida," said FGCU assistant athletics director and men's tennis coach, J. Webb Horton. "Some of the finest young talent in the world would converge on Southwest Florida for an outstanding week of tennis. We are thrilled that the NAIA has been so active in seeking Southwest Florida as its destination, but we must have the full support of the community to make this a reality."
FGCU needs community support in the form of sponsorships and honorary coaches. The host school and city are responsible for the majority of tournament expenses, including a banquet and officials. Last year's national championship was on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
"This is a great opportunity for us as a team and for all of Southwest Florida," said FGCU women's tennis coach Fred Drilling. "It will give our team an opportunity to receive national recognition and bring in an outstanding group of players for tennis enthusiasts throughout Southwest Florida."
