FGCU Nursing Students Leave on Health Mission to Haiti
10/29/2001

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University nursing students will embark on the third Haitian Health Mission Thursday, Nov. 1 through Friday, Nov. 9.

Eight nursing students, along with faculty and community members, will provide health care to Haitians in both rural and urban environments. The trip will immerse students in the Haitian culture for nine days working in a hospital, orphanage and home for the dying.

Through a partnership with the Hope for Haiti Foundation, the students will transport supplies and work with malnourished children in a remote village. The mission will provide the students with a rich experience in cultural connectedness, one of the FGCU School of Nursing’s philosophical underpinnings.

Senior students benefiting from this great educational opportunity are: Althea Pink-Moulton of Cape Coral; Douglas Sean Digby, Julian J. Duroe, Brook A. Greene, and April D. Goodman of Fort Myers; Gradyne M. David and Lee H. Pavel of Naples; and Blyth H. Rubinstein of West Palm Beach.

School of Nursing student alumni relations coordinator Elizabeth (Beth) Murray, RN, MSN; Southwest Florida Anesthesia owner and CEO Emilie (Vicki) Digby, CRNA, RN; and Emeriti Professor M. Joyce Thornton, Ed.D., RN, will accompany the students. Murray said the trip to Haiti is “an exciting and life-changing experience for our students.”

Professor Carol E. Davis is director of the FGCU School of Nursing. As an accredited comprehensive public university, FGCU addresses the higher educational needs of Southwest Florida and provides a learning-centered environment that offers high quality educational opportunities for the general public, such as the Haitian Health Mission.
