Attorneys Make Athletic Logo Recommendations to FGCU

FORT MYERS, FL - Attorneys for Florida Gulf Coast University announced their recommendations today in response to Georgia Southern University’s assertion that the FGCU athletic logo was too similar in design to the GSU athletic logo.

Specifically, the attorneys suggest that FGCU and GSU enter into an agreement which discontinues the use of the original FGCU athletic logo, allows FGCU to sell some existing merchandise that sports the logo, pre-approves the new revised logo and contains mutual releases.

The attorneys agreed that FGCU should move forward to apply for both state and federal trademark registration of the revised logo but also cautioned that the process is not immediate and will require examination of the logo in comparison to other registered logos that use an eagle in their design.

“The eagle is a popular mascot across the country, making it challenging to uniquely depict it for logo usage,” President William C. Merwin said. “We are eager to adopt the new logo so our Athletics Department can promote its programs and teams through merchandise and other marketing vehicles.”
