A "Must Attend" for Small Business People
FORT MYERS, FL - Business owners are encouraged to reserve space now to attend The Entrepreneur’s Law School from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 at the Double Tree Hotel in north Naples to explore the legal issues that have impact upon their businesses. In its fifth year, the Small Business Development Center of Florida Gulf Coast University develops the event and this year, Cohen & Grigsby is sponsoring it.
Participants may attend up to seven workshop sessions. This year’s topics include:
· How To Determine Whether Your Legal Form Is Best for You - Attorney Henry C. Cohen - A discussion of the four popular legal forms for business, Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, Corporation and Limited Liability Company. This discussion will include an analysis of the pros and cons of each of the business types.
· Understanding Agreements for Non-Competes and Protection of Trade Secrets - Attorney Celia Deifik - The session describes how to draft agreements that will withstand attack and why many existing agreements may not be enforceable.
· Contracts: Can I Get That in Writing? - Attorney Raymond Schumann - An overview and description of various forms of business contracts and legal enforcement issues.
· Immigration Law for Employers Entrepreneurs and Foreign Workers - Attorney Tulio Suarez - The fundamentals of Immigration Law including employer compliance with INS hiring documentation requirements; immigration through investment and/or employment; and temporary employee work/business visas.
· How to Bring Investors Into Your Business - Legally - Attorney Judith McCaffrey - The session will discuss the practical and legal aspects of taking money from investors as a method of financing a business.
· Alternatives to Litigation - Attorney Leonard P. Reina - How mediation and arbitration differ and when they are appropriate for small business.
· How to Negotiate and Mediate Integrative Settlements - Attorney Camilo Azcarate - This presentation will introduce a step-by-step approach for getting integrative agreements during negotiations and mediations.
· Small Business Preservation and Succession As Affected By Prenuptial Agreements and Divorce - Attorney Steven Helgemo - The potential effects of divorce on an established small business and how this can be avoided by proper planning which would include a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement.
· Risky Business: The “Must-Have” Facts about Protecting Your Business - Attorney Joe Fuller - An overview of techniques to protect oneself against the loss of hard-earned assets.
· Burden of Proof: How to Prepare When You’re in the Legal Hot Seat - Attorney Keith Grossman - How to prepare for courtroom proceedings; How to prepare for depositions; How to write incident reports; understanding legal jargon and procedures.
· What is My Business Worth? - Attorney Anthony Listrom - This is an overall discussion about the different methods business valuators use to determine the value of a business. Presents the truth about how different methods could value a business at a surprisingly low amount or at a much higher amount.
· The Grass is Always Greener in my Fairway: A “How to” Legal Guide for Retaining Key Employees - Attorney Robert Perry - A primer about incentive programs and approaches to attracting and retaining key talent in your business.
· The American with Disabilities Act - Attorney Jean Rawson - This presentation will be an overview of the ADA and its effect on business. Whom does ADA cover? What employment practices are covered? What is discrimination? What is a reasonable accommodation? What is an undue hardship? How is ADA enforced?
· Danger Ahead: Hot Issues in Employment Law for the Small Business - Attorney Robert Maher - This session includes a overview of recent developments in the legal aspects of employment including the Lee County Equal Employment Ordinance, issues of nationality and employment after September 11 and Americans with Disabilities compliance.
Tuition for either morning or afternoon sessions is $69 if pre-registered and $84 if paid at the door. The full day is $99 if pre-registered and $114 if paid at the door. All registrations include lunch.
