4/1/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - People with a variety of disabilities are invited to learn about numerous recreational resources available at the first Adaptive Recreation Expo from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 at the Florida Gulf Coast University lakefront.

The Expo will feature demonstrations and highlight some of the ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events. Information on different types of recreational resources and activities will be available and participants have the option of actually taking part in activities, including sailing, water-skiing and basketball.

“Water-skiing using a sit-ski will be offered through the FGCU water-ski team and coach. Sailing will be offered through the SHARE organization of Naples,” director of International Services and Student Life, Elaine Hozdik, said. “Lee County Parks and Recreation will have information on their recreational activities as well.”

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and is required for participation in sailing and water skiing at the FGCU lakefront next to the residence halls. Event demonstrations will be between noon and 4 p.m. Accessible parking and refreshments will be available.

The event is free for observers and a small fee is assessed for those participating in certain events to cover participant insurance.

The Expo is spearheaded by Counseling and Student Health Services counselor Rose McGahee and is a joint project of FGCU students, faculty and staff, and members of community agencies that serve people with disabilities.

For more information about the Adaptive Recreation Expo or accommodation assistance, contact McGahee at (941) 590-7925 or mcgahee@fgcu.edu.
