The Best of the Best: Local High School Artists Featured in Congressional Exhibit
FORT MYERS, FL - U.S. Rep. Porter Goss will honor the best high school artists in Southwest Florida during the opening reception and awards event of the 14th Congressional District Art Exhibition from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19 in the Florida Gulf Coast University Library Art Gallery.
The annual show, on display through May 24, is part of a nationwide contest that recognizes the creative talents of high school students.
Every public and private high school in Southwest Florida was invited to submit one piece to compete for the Grand Award, which is judged by a jury of local art experts. The chosen entry hangs in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside other winning pieces from around the country.
Students also get the chance to have their work compete for Merit Awards and for three First Place Awards, one from each county in Rep. Goss’ district, to hang in district offices.
“The event focuses on the student artists, with the Congressman talking publicly with each of the participating artists during the award event,” professor and gallery director, Morgan T. Paine, said. “The setting is fairly informal and the Congressman clearly enjoys the experience of recognizing the contributions and efforts of the community’s young artists.”
The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. All events in the gallery are open to the public free of charge. The gallery is located on the FGCU campus east of I-75 exits 123 and 128, formerly exits 19 and 20.
