The Girls Are Going Places: Conference for Young Women Teaches Financial Independence

FORT MYERS, FL - Girls ages 12 to 16 have the opportunity to broaden their understanding of the business world during Girls Going Places, the Third Annual Entrepreneurial Conference for Young Women, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, in Howard Hall on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University.

Vice president of the Alliance Financial Group Vicky Madeen says the conference is designed to encourage girls to take control of their financial futures at an early age by creating understanding and awareness of career options in nontraditional fields and highlighting the advantages of financial independence.

“Clearly, while women have transcended barriers in many areas, there is still a disparity when it comes to women and their finances,” FGCU Small Business Development Center director Dan Regelski said. “Not only do studies show that girls tend to spend more than their male counterparts, but they are also less likely to invest. Through the program, we hope to encourage young girls to be financially independent adults.”

Over 95 girls from junior and senior high schools in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee counties have already registered for the event, along with over 20 school administrators and numerous parents. Local prominent women who own small businesses will moderate discussions about proprietary opportunities.

The conference is sponsored by the Alliance Financial Group, Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and the FGCU SBDC.

To register or for more information, call the FGCU SBDC at (941) 948-4040.
