FGCU and Georgia Southern Reach Agreement on Athletics Logo
5/23/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University reached a settlement agreement with Georgia Southern University on a revised FGCU athletics logo.

FGCU President William C. Merwin and Georgia Southern President Bruce Grube approved the settlement agreement, which states that Georgia Southern has no objection to the use and registration of the new FGCU logo.

The athletics logo will have a variety of uses, including for athletics uniforms, promotional items and clothing. As required by trademark law, FGCU will proceed with federal trademark registration for the new logo through the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

“We are pleased to have reached a compromise that allows FGCU to move forward with a logo for our athletics program,” Merwin said. “An identifying logo is an important element of intercollegiate athletics and we look forward to displaying the new logo as a symbol for the FGCU Eagles.”

FGCU started intercollegiate play in fall 2000 with men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s tennis. FGCU will begin play in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s cross-country in fall 2002.
