Point Guard Gabe Pean Signs With Eagles
FORT MYERS, FL - A 5’9” point guard from Western High School in Davie, Fla., signed a national letter of intent to play men’s basketball at Florida Gulf Coast University nearly one year to the day that Eagles head coach Dave Balza made history with the signing of the University’s first basketball recruit, also a point guard and the only one in the program until now.
Gabe Pean visited FGCU this spring after a successful senior campaign at Western, one in which he led Coach Jason Looky’s Wildcats to a 21-7 record. Pean was named Third Team All-State in 6A, the state’s highest classification. He was also named Second Team All-County and was the Tournament MVP at Spanish River.
In physical size, Pean is comparatively small but his contributions to team success are big. He averaged 20.1 points and 6.7 assists per game last year. In addition, he was ranked among the top ten in Broward County in five statistical categories: scoring, assists, steals, three-point field goals made and free throws. As a junior, Pean averaged 19.9 points and 6.2 assists.
Pean’s value to his team was noted during his career, one in which he scored over 1,000 points. He was named Team MVP each of his last three years.
Coach Balza is pleased with the latest addition to his team. “I’m ecstatic to be able to add someone as skilled as Gabe Pean at this late date. He is the type of player that I have always won with - quick on quick, court smart and a hard worker.”
Southwest Floridians will get their first look at Pean and the rest of the Eagles in four months when FGCU opens play for its inaugural basketball season on Friday, Nov. 22 in the Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Tournament at TECO Arena.
Season tickets remain on sale at the basketball office or by calling (941) 590-7012.
