FGCU, ABC-7 Announce Partnership to Broadcast Basketball Games Online
11/22/2002

FORT MYERS, FL - College basketball fans, students and family members far and wide will have the ability to listen to all 32 men’s, and a select number of women’s, Florida Gulf Coast University basketball games via the World Wide Web when the men’s team kicks-off their inaugural season at 7:15 tonight.

ABC-7’s web site and the FGCU Athletics web site will each host Internet broadcasts of the games played at colleges and universities throughout Florida and the rest of the country. ABC-7/abc-7.com sports anchor David Moulton will provide play-by-play and insightful commentary for the games. Moulton is also a member of the project’s co-partner WQAM Sportsradio 770-AM’s broadcast team.

“This is truly an exciting opportunity for sports fans of all ages to enjoy FGCU Eagles basketball right on their computer, whether at home or in the office,” ABC-7 new media director Keith Norman said. “We are pleased to partner with the University and Sportsradio 770 to offer exclusive Internet broadcasts of the games to our loyal visitors. And we hope to attract new visitors to our interactive sports section with the addition of this valuable feature.”

FGCU sports information director Andy Platt sees another reason the partnership is beneficial. “We are pleased to partner with ABC-7 in broadcasting FGCU basketball worldwide. We hope to build our fan base as well as attract topnotch student-athletes to FGCU by providing them a way to follow our men’s and women’s basketball teams from the seat of their home.”

The action begins today at 7:15 p.m. with the pre-game show followed by the 7:30 p.m. tip-off of the first-ever FGCU basketball game. The men’s team hosts the University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon to open FGCU’s Hillmyer-Tremont Tip-Off Tournament at TECO Arena.

The remaining 31 scheduled men’s games, and up to four scheduled women’s games, will be broadcast over the course of their 13-week regular seasons and Internet broadcasts of tournament or playoff games will be added as they are scheduled.

abc-7.com is Southwest Florida’s leading news, weather and sports web site and the online home of ABC-7 anchors Sharon Gregory and Len Jennings, and chief meteorologist Jim Reif. The interactive site features ABC-7 WeatherNet and WeatherBug, Feedback Forum, Sports Question of the Week, award-winning video, and now FGCU Eagles basketball.

The new FGCU athletics web site is now available with many new features including up to-date stats and a variety of pictures.
