FGCU Surpasses 3,000 FTE, Spikes State Goal of 2,711 by 2003-04
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announced enrollment for the spring semester topped the 3,000 Full-Time Equivalent level yesterday, surpassing the state-set goal of 2,711 FTE by academic year 2003-04 and the original goal of 3,000 by 2004-05.
“I’m pleased to report that this afternoon FGCU achieved its 3,000 FTE level!” President William C. Merwin said.
“This goal has been the enrollment growth ‘mantra’ for all FGCU faculty and staff since the institution opened, and I applaud the hard work and dedication behind this accomplishment.”
FGCU’s FTE was adjusted down from the original 3,000 because of economy-related budget cuts. FTE is calculated by counting the total number of credit hours taken by students and dividing the total by the standard full-time load. The standards are different for undergraduate and graduate credit hours.
The state uses FTE to calculate funding for each university and now that FGCU has reached the enrollment goal, more money will come into its operating budget computed on a per-FTE basis.
“As you know, the state lowered this goal to 2,711 FTE for the purposes of new enrollment growth funding because of recent years’ budget cuts,” Merwin said. “However, it is exciting to know that we have as of today reached the 3,000 mark as we provide quality higher education in Southwest Florida.”
Five-year old FGCU begins spring semester classes Monday, Jan. 13.
